How to build a list is a question that many online marketers are asking today. You know you need to build a list and you've heard 101 tips telling you how to do it and you probably use at least a few of them but still your results are nothing to write home about.
What most online marketers overlook are the fundamentals of list building but before you can get into the fundamentals you need to know exactly what a list is. Is a list a bunch of emails that you captured because you put out good bait and gave nothing in return? Or is it representative of a vote of confidence by the people on your list because you give value to their lives? Granted you can get a list both ways but which one would be more beneficial to your business?
You get and maintain a quality list of email addresses by providing value on a regular basis. The question then is: "What is value?"
The answer is as simple as a trip to your local grocery store.
In most towns and cities there are more than a couple of grocery stores to choose from and you probably frequent the closest when you need something quick but when you shop for a couple of days or a week at a time you have one store that you prefer over the others.
Why is that? Why do you choose to buy your groceries from that particular store over the others? One reason is because they are most likely to have everything you are looking for. You know that when you shop there you won't have to go to another store to finish your shopping. Other reasons include the store's layout, how easy it is to find things, and other shops and services that are close by. So it's more than the amount of money you spend. You value money sure but you value all those other things as well.
Your list is the exactly same way. Now don't get me wrong you don't want to turn your business into a one stop shop where your customer can get anything he's looking for because that's not what your customer wants. Your customer; the same people who reside on your list, want to glean information from someone who's an authority in their market and when you're selling everything you cannot specialize and excel in one area.
So how does the grocery store analogy hold then? The value that your list places in the information you provide needs to be such that they choose not to go looking anywhere else for it. They need to know that you are the one stop shop for the particular brand of knowledge that is your specialty and that looking elsewhere will only be a waste of time.
So how do you do that? How do you become the expert in your field? One way is to constantly dive deeper into your subject. Question why we do what we do in different situations? Challenge your list to think about your specialty in ways they would have never thought before.
